Should you plan to take photos before or after your wedding ceremony?

My time working with nearly-weds has taught me that this is one detail in wedding planning that seems to get overlooked. When is the best time to take formal photos/video? People can spend countless hours focusing on details for the big day and then when talking with their videographer/photographer do not have a clear plan for capturing official images.

Every wedding day is different. Let's get that point out of the way. Some couples have high expectations for how things go while others are laid back. However, everyone who hires a professional to capture video and pictures wants to save all the special moments from their wedding day.

One big thing to keep in mind, your wedding day is going to fly by. Many videographers and photographers book wedding events using hours on site. So why not work with your professional to get the most out of the time you have them hired?

Your professional should have an outline of how the day should run. Once you talk with her regarding the 'must have' shots she will give you a timeline of what to expect. You should be able to trust her expertise on the most efficient way to capture those moments on your big day.

My recommendation is always to try and get as many official photos done before the ceremony as possible. Many brides want to wait for the groom to see her for the first time that day as she is walking down the aisle. No problem. Take your bridal party photos with your bridesmaids and groomsmen separately. This will make the photo shot list for following the ceremony shorter.

Is this a must? No. But I have seen so many couples run out of time when trying to do all family shots, fun bridal party pictures and portraits of the bride and groom all in a tight time window between ceremony and reception.

Work with your videographer and photographer. They are experienced and should be able to help make sure you get the images you are dreaming of for your wedding memories. Be bold and make sure you feel comfortable with your plan. And let your imagery team be the bad guys that keep the rest of your family and friends on time. Afterall, this is YOUR DAY!
